Property Assessments for Ontario Horse Farms
Update: Dec 10, 2004
We are now aware that some Standardbred and Thoroughbred breeding and racing farms are also being taxed as commercial. This is very surprising considering how all the assessment information and legislation is documented.
We need all horse related people and industries to be aware of these devastating issues and to take part in helping to get this unfair tax reversed. The financial consequences will be severe to all of us - owners, riders, horse related industries and professionals.
We are looking for concerned people to help in any way they can and for articles to appear in Newspapers and other publications. Maybe you can write a letter to the Editor of your local papers, along with one to your MPP.
Please read on and take part in the urgent letter writing campaign. The letters have a lot of great detail in them that will explain the major issues. See the OEF site www.horse.on.ca for news and a copy of the 6 letters with instructions.
This is only one avenue we are going down. We have met and are talking with, on a regular basis, high level people at MPAC in Pickering and have talked with many Senior Policy Advisors in many Ministries... we are making some headway. We are also talking with Tax Specialists and researching farms that have had some success in fighting this. We may finally need to consider legal action if the current approach is not successful for the whole industry. We need legislative change! But legal action will be very costly.
